Will You Run Into The Fire... Or From It?
I thought in my lifetime I would never hear the words “it is no longer safe to be a Jew in America”…
We are now witnessing the reality of those words.
On behalf of PJTN and our global Watchmen, we join the Jewish community in prayer for Mr. Yosef (Warren) Lipschutz, the 69 year-old Orthodox Jewish man who was shot this past Sunday while sitting on a bench outside the Young Israel of North Miami Beach—a drive-by act of viciousness unleashed for still undefined hatred believed by police to be “antisemitic in nature.”
The day following the shooting, the Young Israel of Bal Harbor received an unexpected package delivered by the USPD. A package from an unknown source that had assembled a DVD, a photo of someone pointing a gun and reams of paper filled with antisemitic writings. A faceless enemy—one of hatred’s favorite ploys. The Mayor of Bal Harbor, Gabriel Groisman, was thankfully quick to give comfort to his city’s large Jewish population: “It must be known that the Jewish community will not cower to fear. We stand strong, united and proud,” he told media.
It’s a new day in America. One I hoped we’d never see. A day that grows increasingly dark and uncertain for a Jewish population left to wonder how the security and safety they have previously enjoyed is now threatened in yet another “Promised Land.”
“Can I come to my shul?” “Is it safe to bring my child to the synagogue?” These are the unthinkable questions being heard in America.
The horror of antisemitism is the darkness it breeds in, the fear it strikes and the “facelessness” of the hatred it births.
AP’s trending story from Aaron Heller on May 1 of this year blared “Anti-Semitic attacks spike, killing most Jews in decades leading to an increasing sense of emergency among Jewish communities worldwide. . ." The article went on to say that in addition to shooting attacks and the killing of Jews, assaults and vandalism are at epidemic levels, many believed to be fueled by antisemitic vitriol spewed through the internet, and churned into violence on college campuses where America’s children—now steeped in a full generation of indoctrination from curriculum filled with diminished American values—are versed by leftist teachers with supposed proof that the Holocaust never happened.
I am overwhelmed today by the reality of what I see happening.
Since the vision for PJTN that God gave me in the early days after 9/11, never has there been a more needed time for our mission in support of Israel and the Jewish people. The rumble of distant war is now surrounding us daily and coming from every direction. I am challenged every day… "what battles can our modest PJTN staff focus the fight on today?”
Will it be the antisemitic attack in Miami this week? The antisemitic BDS Movement that Omar, Tlaib and the Squad are pushing, with the help of mainstream media, to normalize in America? Or, the anti-Israel climate growing out of control on our higher-ed and secondary school campuses where children once steeped in the Gospel are now avowed pro-Palestinian disciples and Israel haters? Or the 3 million-member union of teachers and administrators in the NEA who voted to add a bylaw mandating the antisemitic BDS narrative as part of their 2019 organizational platform?
That’s why we focus our message to you – Christians, Jews and all people of conscience, our global PJTN Watchmen task force to stand watch in your communities to confront this growing threat.
I am reminded of a documentary I saw recently on the wildfires of California. For the vast majority of people, fire is something you cook dinner on, gather around with family and friends to roast marshmallows, and on rare occasions, flee from as so many in California and Israel had to do recently. But certainly, it is not something you want to run toward to put out. It is only the brave men and women who make it their job to run toward the blaze and have been well-trained in strategies that can suppress the flames of the largest wildfires. Strategies, when executed, will contain the perimeter, clearing brush ahead of the fire’s path—forming a circle of solidarity back-to-back facing in every direction to battle amid the sudden, seemingly overwhelming, wind-blown wall of flames surrounding them in their brotherhood of brave souls.
That is the solidarity of PJTN Watchmen around the globe! PJTN was formed to create that firewall of protection in our communities around the world. And you, PJTN Watchmen, are those brave souls! We must push back, work harder, stand together, shoulder-to-shoulder and back-to-back in solidarity against the flames trying to engulf our values, our children, our country and our resolve to God that we will stand with Israel and the Jewish people no matter what threats we will face.
Matthew 25:40-43 says,
40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
Can our Jewish brethren count on you to stand at their side in your community?
